Amazon.com Review
The Brother Personal FAX275 combines important small-business fax features in a freestanding home fax machine that's equipped with a convenient telephone handset. Sporting a compact design with bold and clearly marked operating features, the FAX275 prints on a ThermaPlus paper roll aided by an automatic paper cutter. Additional advantages include a 10-page automatic document feeder and 25-station automatic dialing.

The FAX275 was easy to set up and took only minutes without referring to the owner's manual, though we recommend perusal of the manual if you're setting up the machine up on a line with a phone that has an external answering machine or on a line with numbers that roll over. (Note that phone lines using call waiting or voice mail may run into trouble operating the FAX275.)

The handset is very lightweight and comfortable with a tapered design. In our tests, it delivered very clear, clean sound. The automatic fax-phone switch made it easy to place calls and receive faxes through the same phone line. The FAX275 supports caller ID and distinctive ring if offered through your phone service provider.

The unit's faxes were clear and easy to read. In order to avoid curling faxes, the FAX275 uses ThermaPlus paper, which is not as convenient as plain paper but performed well compared to most roll-type fax papers. The 16-digit LCD displayed clear, bright numbers and messages. The FAX275's ringer was unpleasantly jarring, but the ring volume was easily to adjust.

The phone index for alphabetical search of stored numbers is a great convenience, as is the automatic redial, delayed transmission, and hold button. The FAX275 includes a starter roll of ThermaPlus paper and a 90-day warranty.

Pros:

  • Easy setup and use
  • Crisp, quality printing
  • Easy-to-load paper roll

Cons:

  • Cannot use plain paper
  • May conflict with some phone services

5 out of 5 stars Brother's FAX275   March 14, 2001

is great for home use. It's very easy to setup and the directions are straight to the point. Fax quality is wonderful for a little fax machine like this and makes good quality photocopies of documents. If you want a fax machine for minor faxing and great value for your money, I would suggest this.

5 out of 5 stars E-MAIL BY PHONE !!! with a Personal Fax & Telephone   November 12, 2000

The small FAX275 personal fax and phone is a great value - not only
for faxing .... But you may use it for E-mail too. The 10 programmable
One-Touch keys plus 15 Speed-Dial buttons make it easy to poll your
E-mail from services like "Yahoo! by Phone" and others. My
wife don't like computers but she like to receive E-mail through this
FAX275 machine. For less than ... we got a fax - phone - E-mail
center, ordered on November 7th 2000 - arrived and installed (it's
that easy) on November 9th 2000 and now in use - for faxing and MUCH
more. Sincerely - Jan A. Loeffler, Yes2Art.com originator

Bought this after using older version with no problems for ~10 years.
No ink cartridges needed.
Works well with manual answering machine.
Small footprint.
Has speakerphone, caller ID, speed dial, redial, makes copies and more.
This nicer, updated version did not disappoint and appears to be another dependable workhorse and good value by Brother.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics, and the better for it   January 20, 2007

This fax/telephone is simplicity itself. It is great for light-duty, infrequent faxing -- exactly what I need for a home machine. No ink-jets to dry out if it stands inactive for a while. It is also extremely light weight. It's a pity that it has been discontinued. I'm buying a second one to have as a backup machine -- I hate the new, 10-ton wonders that have a million complicated functions I don't need. I hope some smart manufacturer -- perhaps Brother themselves -- will put it back into production. In my search for this one, I spoke to many sympathetic friends & colleagues who were sorry this kind of machine is no longer readily available.
