Send scans, copies, and faxes directly from the MFC-8460N to colleagues that are listed in your network address book.

Choose the document feeder or the flatbed.
As a full-function stand-alone fax machine, the MFC-8460N supports up to 340 total speed dial locations, and also incorporates dual access and broadcast faxing features. It stores up to 600 pages for Quick Scan faxing or out-of-paper fax reception. Stand-alone fax and copy operation is standard, so no computer is required.

When operating as a scanner, the unit is capable of color scanning up to 9,600 dpi interpolated resolution (up to 600 x 2,400 dpi optical). For Windows and OS X 10.2.4 or greater based users, there is an easy-to-use "scan to" button for scanning directly to an FTP site, image application, OCR, E-mail application or file. Then you can quickly send faxes and Internet faxes to your selection, and perform scan-to-e-mail-address functions.

The MFC-8460N provides the ability for an administrator to set various levels of password protected access to certain features, for each of up to 25 different users per machine. Through this feature, you can restrict specific employees such as part-time workers or interns from access to scan-to-e-mail functions or other avenues for sending data outside your walls.

5 out of 5 stars Great Multifunction Device   March 29, 2007

It was between this and the other brother mfc that performs duplex printing for my home office which two people use on a daily basis. We figured we didn't need the duplex (although we wanted it!), so we decided to save about 100.00 and go with this one.

I was very pleased with the construction, installation (XP) and documentation. Brother has a new customer in my organization. Coming from HP, I was acustomed to clunky software, and machines that wouldn't always perform as planned.

I couldn't be happier with this product and would recommend to all.

5 out of 5 stars Work like a Charm   March 8, 2007

I purchased this printer after I had 2 inkjets to go belly-up on me. I was tired of the inkjet short longevity with the volume that we print at my house. I began looking around for a replacement MFC that was lasar. I also called the repair store that had worked on my previous 2 printers. The repair man recommended this printer. He was right on the money. This one prints great, has great speed, and was a breeze to set up. To get a BW laser MFC at this price for the what you get is an awesome deal.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Small Businesses   August 30, 2008

I have read some unfair reviews on this machine. I say unfair because I love it. I own a 9/11 Museum in Manhattan and just purchased this. It make copies very fast, has a paper feed table that is unbreakable because of the crutch that was ingeniously created below it (our last one broke) and we have faxed up to 30 page docs for billing at a time without the machine getting jammed. So, I don't know what all the fuss is, unless you have a large business that demands major copy machine output. It is a good machine for the money and we have no problems with it. -GMS www.GroundZeroMuseum.com New York City

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Small Office Machine   January 15, 2007

Purchased this machine to replace 3 older machines in my home office. The printer is crisp and fast. Setup was easy. Even the network access was easy and working out of the box. The Scanner makes clean prints and the document feeder works great.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Multifunction Laser Printer- 20 month follow-up   March 10, 2008

I have now had this printer for 20 months and have had no problems with printing, faxing or copying (more than I can say for any of the HPs I have owned in the past). It is setup on the home apple network and does exactly what it is supposed to. The only function I have not tried is scanning. If you get this machine, it is a good idea to always keep an extra toner cartridge handy, since there is almost no warning that you are about to run out. When I install a new one, I go online and order the next replacement. Bottom line: 20 months and still no reservations about this printer.

Original review: When I bought a new Apple iMac earlier this year, I found that my HP laserjet 3200 would not work with the new Apple Leopard OS and HP did not have drivers that would fix the problem. I went shopping at the local office supply stores and read the Amazon reviews and finally settled on this Brother printer. Wanted the speed of a laser printer and did not need color. Fax was important, copier useful and scanner a nice bonus. I was somewhat concerned after reading some of the reviews of this product by others but so far (2 months) I have had none of their problems. The 8460N worked right out of the box. Setup with the iMac was painless and I now have it set up as a bonjour printer attached to my new Apple Time Capsule. No problem with that setup either, once I realized I had to uninstall it as a USB printer and reinstall as a bonjour printer. When it is in sleep mode, it is completely quiet. When I send it a document, it wakes quickly, prints very quickly and will go back to sleep mode if not given more work to do. It does not make excessive noise while it is printing, relative to the HPs I have owned. And there is no noise when it is in sleep mode.
Compared to the HPs I looked at, this Brother seems well constructed and durable.
The only minor negative that others have also mentioned is that the printed pages are delivered in the cavity below the copier deck, which you can see in the picture of it. Not a major issue but can be a bit hard to get hold of all the pages from this spot.
So far I am completely satisfied with my decision to buy this printer and am comfortable recommending it without reservation.
