Amazon.com Product Description
With a 2.5-inch flip-up color LCD display and support for wired or wireless network printing, the Brother MFC-820CW is a workhorse designed to make your work and leisure a lot easier. The unit has a convenient flatbed design that accommodates either single sheets or bound documents for color copying, faxing, or color scanning.

Print, fax, scan, copy, and print photos directly from a memory card with the MFC-820CW. It's got wireless networking, too! View larger.

Use the LCD display to preview your photos before you print them.
The maximum paper size is 8.5 x 14 inches, and there's a ten-page automatic document feeder for making quick multi-page copies. The copier supports reduction and enlargement of documents from 25 to 400 percent, and with print and copy speeds of up to 20 pages per minute, the MFC-820CW is designed to keep up with busy offices.

Meanwhile, outstanding resolution of up to 6000 x 1200 dpi allows you to print sharp photos on glossy paper, and borderless photo printing is supported, too. You can preview your photos and faxes on the 2.5-inch LCD before printing, so you know exactly what you're printing ahead of time. The MFC-820CW's "PhotoCapture" capability features an integrated media drive that lets you print directly from a memory card. Supported card formats include CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro, xD-Picture Card, MultiMediaCard, and Secure Digital. You can even scan directly to a memory card, and as with photo printing, there's no PC required for copying and faxing.

And speaking of faxing, the MFC-820CW's 16 MB of built-in memory lets you store up to 480 pages in memory before you even dial a number. Printing is enhanced by a four-cartridge ink system that allows you to replace just the colors and inks that you're running low on.

Last but not least, the MFC-820CW features versatile networking capabilities that allow you to share the unit among multiple computers on your home or office network. Print, scan, fax, and access the unit's PhotoCapture features via a wired or wireless network. The unit supports 802.11 b/g networking so you can place it anywhere and use it wire-free. A USB 2.0 connection is also provided for directly connecting the unit to a computer. PC and Mac printer and scanning drivers are included, and the latest updates are available from Brother.com. Brother provides a one-year warranty, covering parts and service.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so in love   May 28, 2006

Ever been in love with a product? So proud of your purchase you'll sit there and stare it for seemingly hours? That's how I feel about my Brother 820CW MFC. I keep walking in my office to stare at it.

First let me say the dimensions are pleasantly small. It's about 14x14 with the output paper tray stowed, and about 14x18 with the paper tray extended. It's not very tall either. Compared to the behemoth dimensions of my old HP K80, it seems tiny. It's also very stylishly designed.

I knew I needed a network printer, because I moved my server to another location. I could have gone for a wired version, but I thought, why not prepare for the future? I might want to stick my router in a closet some day. This thing could be sitting ANYWHERE and function as a printer. I'm so glad I sprung for the wireless -- I have it set up wireless now, 128-bit WEP, and it's worked flawlessly so far. I've printed and scanned some huge documents with no problems whatsoever. Of course, my WiFi-G network is pretty stable; if you have lots of interference or overlapping networks you might have a problem. But if that's the case I'm sure you already know that.

The scanning and copying and faxing all work great. The software is blessedly lean and simple to use while still being complete, unlike the bloatware that HP gives out. Why does HP insist on crippling your machine? Anyway, the Brother software is fantastic. I can even configure it so that I press a button on the printer, and it will immediately start scanning to a (user-chosen) application on a (user-chosen) PC. It's all simple and easily configurable.

One note: When I initially installed the software from CD, it also installed a bunch of PaperPort/OCR crap that I didn't want or need. I later de-installed and re-installed from the downloaded distribution from Brother's website, and it didn't have that stuff in it. Just so you know. You might want OCR; I never use it.

The other "extravagance" was the color LCD. I had no plans on printing photos without using my computer, so who cares, right? Well, in addition to other neat uses (like being able to preview faxes before printing), the little color screen just seems to make the configuration and management of the whole unit so much easier and more pleasant. The menus are well designed and let you set up the whole thing quickly and easily, even the wireless networking. Well worth the splurge, in retrospect.

One other fun technote: Brother includes a phone number to fax your registration to. Yeah right. But the fun thing is, they will fax you back a confirmation! -- So I was able to use that fax number to test both inbound and outbound faxes during my setup. Fun!

Another technote: I have my network locked down with MAC-address restrictions. I had a bit of a time trying to find the printer's MAC address until I realized I could use the LCD's menu system to print out some configuration pages, one of which contained the MAC address. Just so you know.

The multisheet feeder seems more than adequate. I copied a stack of about 10 pages, including some that were kind of crumpled and dog-eared, and it didn't complain at all. Also, no paper jams so far, and I'm using the dirt-cheap walmart paper. Just make sure you fan the stack of paper before inserting it, just like it tells you...

Haven't tried printing on photo paper yet, but the "best" quality on normal paper looks great. I'm sure it can't compete with "photo printers", but if you're looking at a multi-function I'm sure you're prepared to compromise just a little...

That's all. Buy it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing small Printer   September 1, 2006

Keep It Simple "aashu" (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
I looked around for all the different products out there and somehow decided on this on. There are not many reviews out there but the features of the machine convinced me that this would be a nice choice.

With that said, this printer is an amazing machine. I bought it here at Amazon which is cheapest compared to everywhere else.

With all the features like, color screen, In built wireless interface, All color functionality, Media card reader, this is a winner. Finish of the product may not be top of the line but it works very well. Setup is easy, wireless setup was a breeze(I used the wep key as well) and setup 2 of my laptops to use the printer. Print speed may be a little slow but didn't bother me.
On top of that, it is compact and Ink is soooo cheaper than HP and canon.
I would highly recommend it for Home use or a small personal office.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend this unit highly   November 9, 2006

I shopped and asked everyone I know about these multi function units. The Brother is compact, easy to set up, looks great, and works great.
I know several people who bought the HP unit and it eats ink and breaks down. My brother has performed flawlessly. A very nice purchase

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Printer for the Money; Handles the Basics Well   September 9, 2006

I also did plenty of research and bottom line ... I was looking for a multi-function (printer, fax, copy, scan) that did wireless out of the box without any added print server hardware and so forth. I purchased it for slightly over $200 from Amazon. This unit worked great out of the box. The wireless config was a breeze and the color screen made configuration especially easy. It prints well, copies well, and the software for the PC seems to work nicely and simply. This is not a top of the line multi-function ... but if you need quick and easy wireless printing, decent print quality, and don't print huge volume ... this is a nice choice.

5 out of 5 stars Check for Firmware Update   January 5, 2007

Brother has released a firmware update which improves the reliability of the MFC-820CW's wireless networking. It's easy to get by visiting Brother.com, then clicking on Software Download at the top of their homepage and following the prompts. So... it seems that its only weakness has been addressed. Brother seems to have good support for their products, which is a rare thing these days. After considering similar units from HP and Lexmark, I can easily say that I recommend this Brother.
